Following the release of the LOP Practitioner’s Guideline webinar series on sampling and laboratory testing for open pit operations (see here and here), a significant number of questions were received from geologists, geotechnical engineers, laboratory personnel, and mine operators around the world. The webinars generated strong engagement and highlighted the industry’s desire for practical guidance on applying the recommendations to real-world projects.
While the webinars provided a comprehensive overview of key topics including sampling, point load testing, UCS and triaxial testing, failure envelope development, and direct shear testing, participants raised many detailed questions relating to specific situations they encounter in the field and laboratory. These questions ranged from sample preservation and handling, to specimen preparation, test interpretation, failure classification, data processing, and selection of appropriate testing methodologies.
To ensure that the valuable discussions arising from the webinars were captured and shared with the broader industry, this series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) documents is developed. The FAQs provide expanded explanations and practical recommendations from the webinar presenters and technical contributors, helping practitioners better understand the intent and application of the guideline recommendations.
Many of the questions highlighted common challenges faced across different commodities, geological settings, and operational environments. In several cases, webinar participants sought clarification on nuances that could not be fully explored within the constraints of the webinar format. The questions also revealed areas where differences in industry practice, laboratory procedures, or interpretation approaches can influence the quality and consistency of geotechnical data. By addressing these topics, the FAQ documents provide additional context, practical examples, and clarification on the rationale behind the guideline recommendations, helping practitioners make informed decisions when designing and implementing site-specific investigation and testing programs.
These documents are intended to complement the webinar series and associated guidelines, not replace them. Together, they provide an additional resource that supports consistent, high-quality sampling, testing, and interpretation practices across the mining industry. By making these responses available to all practitioners, the LOP aims to improve knowledge sharing, reduce uncertainty, and promote best practice in geotechnical investigations and laboratory testing programs.
